Rippee Writes: 2022 football schedule released
Some bye week notes, a look at next year's football schedule and a former Rebel in The Show
Hope everyone is having a good Wednesday. We’ve got a new podcast out. Since it’s the bye week, we decided to do a hoops check in with former Andy Kennedy staffer Bracken Ray. He’ll be on the podcast regularly throughout basketball season and I am certain you will enjoy his insight. Check that out here or anywhere you get podcasts.
We have some football notes, a former Ole Miss Rebel in The Show and a dumb golf note to get to today.
Bye week presser notes
Ole Miss had media availability today and yesterday. Here are a few noteworthy things from that.
- The Rebels practiced yesterday and today, and will have another one tomorrow, a conditioning session on Friday morning and then will have the weekend off. The team is pretty healthy, which is huge.
- Kiffin on Matt Corral: “He makes plays every Saturday that guy just don’t make. Ole Miss fans need to appreciate this because he is a generational arm talent. He makes plays that most other guys don’t make and even guys starting on Sundays don’t make.”
Ealy: “I don’t believe there is anyone can beat us but ourselves.”
This didn’t make the waves I figured it would be make when it first reached the internet, which an encouraging sign for both reading comprehension and faux outrage culture, but this is a quote that circulated from Jerrion Ealy’s media availability yesterday. I don’t really know why. What do you want him to say? “Yeah, we don’t have a much of a shot but we will try hard.”
Ole Miss isn’t scared of Alabama. That’s good. No one has ever admitted to being scared and nor would they, but there was absolutely a different mindset with the 2017, 2018, and 2019 teams when they faced off against Alabama. They likely knew deep down the didn’t have a shot. That’s not the case with this team. This group thinks they can and will go over there and win. That’s a good thing. You shouldn’t read much further into it than that.
- To add to that, here’s Lakia Henry: “I feel like if we could have gotten a few stops last year, we could have won the game. It was a defensive loss. That is how I look at it. We have to stop them. They are a great team, but we are too. If we can get stops, it should be a great game.”
- Henry also loves playing with Chance Campbell: “Chance is a great linebacker. He’s very smart and he’s fast. We communicate very well. I am very glad we got that guy. He is a next-level linebacker.”

2022 Football Schedule Released
The 2022 Ole Miss Football schedule dropped yesterday. Here it is below.
Let’s get into some detailed analysis.
Best case: Ole Miss goes 12-0 wins a National Championship and a statue is built for Lane and Knox Kiffin.
Worst Case: Ole Miss goes 0-12, Kiffin is fired and the shut down the football program for gross incompetence.
In all seriousness, this is an interesting schedule. There’s opportunity to start quite well — though I have no idea what the personnel will look like next year. It’s September 2021 right now. — and some tough games to end the year. I read that next year is the first time Ole Miss will play Alabama in November since 1944. So there is that.
Ole Miss adds three-star athlete to 2022 class
The Rebels landed another win on the recruiting trail with the commitment of three-star athlete Jaylon White. He’s out of Parkview, Arkansas and it sounds like he will be a safety when he arrives in Oxford. White held offers from Arkansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Baylor and Oklahoma State among others. He’s a great athlete with a 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame.
I am not a recruiting guru, but Zach Berry is. Here’s his Rebel Grove story on White’s commitment. It will make you smarter.
Current Deal: For being a loyal subscriber, show him proof of subscription and you’ll get a 16 oz. prime strip for $15 and a pack of sausage for $5. That’s a hell of a dinner on the grill for 20 bucks. Go check him out, it’s the best place in Mississippi to get meat and Oxford is lucky to have it.
Fortez homers in call up to The Show
Nick Fortes made his Big League debut for the Miami Marlins on Saturday and wasted no time making an impact. He belted a towering dinger in his second at bat.
Fortes hit another one last night against the Washington Nationals and is 5-9 over four games. Fortes was a great hitter for Ole Miss and was a crucial piece on the 2016 and 2018 teams. If you’ll remember, he split time between catcher, DH and 1B because of Cooper Johnson. I never really knew what Fortes’ professional outlook was. I knew he could hit and was a decent catcher, but didn’t figure the glove and arm would play at the Big League level. I was wrong. In fact, scouts seem to favor his glove more than his bat. Out of the Ole Miss guys taken in that 2018 draft, I did not have Fortes pegged as the one to make the quickest ascent through the minor leagues. I figured that title would go to Ryan Rolison.
Good for Fortes. We don’t actually know any of these college guys we cover. The access we get simply doesn’t work that way. But he was always an insightful interview, which is often rare as these kids are trained to say as little as possible. Even cooler, his close pal and fellow Florida native, Ryan Olenek, was there to take it all in.
Scathing development at Ryder Cup: Brooks talked to Bryson
This somehow turned itself into a news briefing across click-thirsty platforms yesterday. In this rare and exclusive footage from Whistling Straights, you’ll see a man enter the picture from the left, Brooks Koepka, approach another man on the right, Bryson DeChambeau, and… speak.
Are we sure this is something that should be noteworthy heading into the biggest team event in the sport? I get that there is beef among a few guys on the team, most notably these two, but isn’t this why Europe usually kicks our ass? This comes on the heels of Koepka’s comments about not really loving Ryder Cup week because it messes up his usual nap routine. Meanwhile, Ian Poulter is playing in his 1,000th Ryder Cup and as fired up as ever to kick the ever living shit out of anyone he faces. Europe seems to embrace the team comradery aspect of the Ryder Cup much better than the Unite States, which is both odd and telling. It’s odd because those guys aren’t even all from the same country, and it’s telling in the results over the last two decades. The closest thing we have to a Poulter is Patrick Reed, and he’s not even on the team anymore, but is instead spending his time having his family tweet about how he got screwed over via burner accounts. I wonder how this week will turn out.
But at least Brooks talked to Bryson. All is well in the USA team room.
